Event Manager/Cultural Programs Manager

Manages programming and planning of events at the Culture Center under the direction of the West Virginia Department of Tourism. Reports to the Director of Events & Outreach. Performs other related duties.

Examples of Work

  • Establishes planning for programmed activities undertaken by the department.
  • Establishes monitoring systems for budgets and planning for programmed activities, such as exhibits, events, and festivals.
  • Enforces established policies in programming; assists in establishing new policies and in interpreting them for staff and the public.
  • Maintains the Culture Center’s calendar of events and ensures its accuracy.
  • Communicates event logistics with all events, security, and operational staff.
  • Assists in setting up and breaking down events. 
  • Markets the Culture Center as a premier events center and works to recruit new events to the space.
  • Approves leave and overtime accrued by staff.
  • Supervises both professional and support staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of staging and display techniques for the performing and visual arts.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and administrative principles, procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of state and federal budgetary requirements and practices.
  • Ability to plan the exhibition of performing and visual art shows and events, and other cultural and historical programs.
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge of the performing arts to provide assistance to artists and to prepare and plan performances.
  • Ability to prepare and present written and oral reports and presentations.
  • Ability to interact with other employees, artists and the general public in order to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to evaluate existing programs and make recommendations to implement, improve and revise programs as needed.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Four years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience working in the industry on a professional level or performing similar work. 

This job opportunity is not in the classified service and is not covered under the Administrative Rule of the WV Division of Personnel. This position is located at the Capitol Complex in Charleston and works full-time, regular business hours. It has competitive pay and benefits. Remote work is not permitted.  Limited travel required.
