Hike Your Way Through These 5 Metro Valley Trails
What many don’t know about the bustling city of Huntington is that it neighbors many secluded nature trails. Looking to get off the beaten path and explore while still having dining, shopping and entertainment options at your fingertips? We’ve got just the place for you! These Metro Valley treks are the perfect addition to your next adventure.
1. Ritter Park Loop
This trail meanders its way through Ritter Park, a nationally recognized public park famous for its publicly accessible rose garden. In addition to the garden, the 5.2-mile-long route takes hikers by wide open green spaces, a century-old log cabin and the waters of Four Pole Creek. The trail is mostly flat, making for an enjoyable walk. Find downtown Huntington located just a couple blocks away.
2. Guyandotte River Trail
This 7.3 mile trail leads hikers alongside the Guyandotte River in Barboursville. Mostly flat terrain and a very easy to follow path makes this an ideal trail for new hikers. The river trail is part of the larger Barboursville Park complex, which includes multiple turf fields, five playgrounds as well as an impressive disc golf course.
3. Overlook Trail
This two-mile long path lies within Beech Fork State Park and gets its name from the majestic view of the park down below that hikers can take in once they reach the trail’s summit. The trail is somewhat steep, but manageable even if you are not an experienced hiker. It is one of five trails available within the park. While here, be sure to check out the park’s stunning lake, which is perfect for both fishing and boating.
4. Meeks Mountain Trails
Head to Hurricane City Park in Putnam County to explore this system of more than 20 miles of trails. A project that first began in 2018 with a mission to build and sustain a network of trails for the health and well-being of the people continues to grow every day. Although these trails take visitors deep into a woodland oasis, the trails are all well-marked and maintained. This spot is also home to prime mountain biking topography.
5. Ridenour Lake Trail
Located in Nitro, Ridenour Lake Trail is wonderful for those looking for a quick and easy outdoor activity. The path surrounds the lake for a total of 1.2 miles, giving gorgeous views as well as access to fishing from the shore.
