Get Outside With These Outdoor Activities in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle

A region that is known for its relaxed atmosphere rich in history, scenery and small-town charm, West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle is also full of outdoor activities unlike anywhere else. Memories here await you to claim them as your own.

Escape the hustle and bustle of busy metro regions and explore what makes the Eastern Panhandle an adventure lover’s playground.

Historic Hikes

One of the best ways to explore history-rich towns like Harpers Ferry is taking it slow on a scenic hike. Explore the five-mile out-and-back Harpers Ferry to Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail. Generally considered an easy route, this trail takes an average of one hour and 45 minutes to complete and nears Harpers Ferry. This is a popular trail among avid hikers and bird watchers. Also take a stroll on the four-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail that runs through Harpers Ferry. For a view of the town that will have you feeling like you’re staring at a painting, head out on the 4.5-mile out-and-back Maryland Heights Trail.

Near towns like Martinsburg, Harpers Ferry and Berkeley Springs Washington Heritage Trail provides hikers the chance to follow the footsteps of George Washington. This 136-mile-long National Scenic Byway runs along the Potomac River and passes through three counties and several historic districts. Whether you are a history buff or a nature enthusiast, you will see why George Washington fell in love with this region more than two centuries ago.

Thrilling Water Recreation

The Eastern Panhandle provides numerous opportunities for you to explore the town from unique points of view. Float, paddle or raft your way down the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers with River Riders. Take on class I-III rapids by white water rafting, tubing, kayaking and canoeing. Other activities include canopy tour/zip lining, aerial forest adventure parks, mountain biking, lodging and fishing.

River & Trail Outfitters also offers exciting water recreation. Blaze through the rushing rapids by whitewater rafting and kayaking or take it slow by canoeing or tubing. To become a more seasoned rafter, book a river trip and lessons on the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and Antietam Creek. River Trail & Outfitters also sells new and used canoes, kayaks and paddling accessories. Adventures off the water include ziplining, biking, camping, team-building, hiking trips, climbing, cross-country skiing and more.

Hit the Green

The Eastern Panhandle is a golfer’s dream. Hit the green at the Locust Hill Golf Course in Charles Town. Bring your clubs and enjoy 18 holes of exceptional golf – with four sets of tees on every hole offer golfing at its best for all skill levels. Each tee offers challenges across the 35 acres of lakes, ponds and streams. You will notice the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, which cross the region and form a breathtaking backdrop to Locust Hill.

Take a Spin

If you happen to be an avid racer, drifter or just a huge fan of motorsports with a need for speed, then rev up your engine for Summit Point Motorsport Park, a two-mile racetrack that’s just a 10-minute drive from Charles Town. Driving enthusiasts can register for driving programs including autocross, Drift Nirvana, seat time, accident avoidance courses and much more. Spectators can enjoy watching races and other special events that are scheduled throughout the year.
