Fall Foliage Road Trip: U.S. Route 50

Mid-Ohio Valley Sights

Rounding out a beautiful fall season in Almost Heaven, our final fall foliage report is guiding us towards a favorite route. Savor the last of the golden hues to grace the hills of West Virginia by taking a scenic drive this weekend. A majority of the state has already turned for the season, but vibrant color remains in some southern portions of the state and in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

Begin your road trip in Parkersburg, where historic landmarks and unique spots set the stage. Spend some time strolling through the Julia-Ann Square Historic District to check out a grand collection of Victorian homes—standing tall in all of their splendor. A stop in town is never complete without a visit to the Oil & Gas Museum where you can travel back in time and learn about the rich history of the industry.

Before heading out of Parkersburg, stop by Fort Boreman Park for a little more historical exploration. Located on the site of a Civil War fort, this hilltop spot provides a breathtaking overlook of the valley that lay below. Pack a picnic basket and stay for a while, soaking up the stunning fall foliage at the confluence of the Little Kanawha and Ohio rivers.

After enjoying lunch with a view, head just 13 minutes up the road to the McDonough Wildlife Refuge. Within the 277 acres of this peaceful retreat, relax while keeping an eye out for the white-tailed deer, turkey, fox and coyote that call the refuge home. Take some time to explore the 6 trails that wind through this fall foliage beauty before hitting U.S. Route 50 towards North Bend State Park.

Pass through 45 minutes worth of scenic rolling hillsides, alive with fall color, before arriving at North Bend State Park. Take your pick of adventure activities, including some late-season kayaking or trail biking. Home to the 72-mile North Bend Rail Trail, those looking for a stroll or a cycle are in luck.

Round out your final fall foliage road trip with a cozy cabin stay in one of nine cabins nestled into a secluded ridge of the park or enjoy an overnight stop-over in the North Bend State Park Lodge.
