Elk Management Evening Tour

October 3, 2019

Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State occurred. The four-hour activity begins at 4:00 p.m. at Chief Logan Lodge. The tour ticket includes a finger food and beverage center, “All About Elk” program, transportation to the elk translocation site, and outdoor time walking to experience the terrain, vegetation, elk habitat and potential sighting and souvenir. Tours have limited seating and reservations are required in advance.

Hearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunset at the tour site is outstanding, in addition to looking and listening for elk and observation of other wildlife in the area. Some walking will be encouraged at the outdoor site for those interested. Lauren Cole, Naturalist/Biologist is the tour leader.

To have the best possible tour, these considerations are necessary: if necessary, carry on items must be small to accommodate all passengers more comfortably. The tour is better suited for ages 12 and older. Pets are not permitted due to the nature of the location and scouting activity. Use of non-scented products are encouraged and packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy, closed-toes shoes or boots is required; no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines, but all at a reasonable pace.

The cost is $30 per adult and $27 for youth under 15. An overnight package of $150 includes accommodation for two at Chief Logan Lodge and two elk tour tickets. Ticket or package prices include taxes, but not gratuity. The tour is limited to 12 participants. Advanced reservations are required and confirmed by payment, as available, by calling Chief Logan Lodge at 304-855-6100.
