Civil War Symposium - April 11, 2026

Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation and Davis & Elkins present a Civil War Symposium on April 11, 2026 at Davis & Elkins’ Myles Center for the Arts from 9 am to 4 pm. Four scholars will present on the theme of Chronicling the Fight: Art & Photography of the Civil War. Topics include Matthew Brady, the famous photographer who made the horrors of war more intimate, and the stories and photographs of West Virginia soldiers. West Virginia’s author, historian, and archaeologist W. Hunter Lesser will present research on art created during the First Campaign of the Civil War, which brought battle to western Virginia and set these counties on the path to statehood.

In addition to engaging research and presentations, Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation, Historic Beverly Preservation, and other scholars will prepare exhibits on other Civil War topics.

Admission to the symposium is $35, which includes light morning refreshments and a hearty lunch.
Students with an ID may preregister for free.
