This job opportunity is not a Civil Service position and is not covered under the Administrative Rule of the WV Division of Personnel. This position is located at the Capitol Complex in Charleston and requires a full-time work schedule during regular business hours. This position may occasionally require after-hours or holiday scheduling. Remote work is not permitted. Limited travel may be required. Passing a criminal background check is a provision of employment.

The West Virginia Department of Tourism seeks a multi-talented individual to join our team at the Culture Center in Charleston. The successful candidate will oversee all educational programming at the Culture Center, assist the Department’s satellite sites in their programming, serve as the Department’s liaison to the WV Department of Education, and supervise a team of other staff members who carry out educational programming. This position will report to the Director of Operations for the West Virginia Department of Tourism.
Responsibilities
- Plans and executes curriculum development and programming for educational activities undertaken by the department
- Develops educational programs for diverse age groups, from K-12 students to adults.
- Establishes relationships with k-12 schools/teachers to encourage visitation to the Culture Center and satellite sites (Independence Hall, Grave Creek Archaeological Complex and Camp Washington Carver).
- Serves as Department Liaison with the Department of Education.
- Coordinates events and exhibits in conjunction with the Department of Education.
- Supervises a team of staff members who deliver educational programming for children and adults.
- Plans educational programs for the unit.
- Plans, coordinates and oversees special tours and educational events for the Department, including but not limited to the West Virginia History Bowl and the WV Dance Festival.
- Leads, develops, and evaluates outreach programs to schools for the entire Department, including the West Virginia State Library, State Archives, Historic Preservation Office, Arts Office, State Museum, and satellite museums.
- Other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills
- Knowledge of curriculum development for both K-12 and adults.
- Knowledge of supervisory and administrative principles, procedures and techniques.
- Ability to confidently present lectures, tours and workshops to the public.
- Ability to prepare and present written and oral reports and presentations.
- Ability to interact with other employees and the general public in order to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to evaluate existing programs and make recommendations to implement, improve and revise programs as needed.
- Ability to memorize scripts to give tours as needed.
- Knowledge of various teaching methods.
- Knowledge and ability to use educational technology, digital learning platforms and office software.
Preferred Qualifications
Training: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
Substitution: Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in a related position.
