Mannington Museums
Mannington, WVMannington's biggest attraction to visitors is probably our rich and colorful past. We're an old coal and oil town and we've seen our share of riches. We have arguably the best indoor museums in the county, our West Augusta Museum in the old Wilson school on East Main Street, and the Round Barn Museum on Flaggy Meadow Road. The West Augusta Historical Society Museum is housed in the former Wilson School, which was built in 1912. In 1980 the Historical Society purchased and closed the building for renovation until 1982. Today it currently houses an astounding number of antique artifacts from the community and shelves of local historical publications. If you want to see ancient Native American artifacts, Colonial, Confederate, Gas, Coal relics, antique furniture, dolls, watches and assorted other memorabilia—this is the place. You can even see "Father of West Virginia" Governor Francis Pierpont's bedstead here!
Within the museum grounds are a two-story log cabin and a retired Chessie System caboose. You can go inside and dream of it being your very own camper cabin. There is also an old post office/gas station so very small you don't need to go inside—just look in the window. What fun this place is! Bring your children. Let them see what things were like in the "olden days."
