Brewer’s Row in Charleston, WV is Worth a Visit

West Virginia’s Capital City is currently experiencing a blossoming craft beer and beverage scene. Several new breweries and distilleries have opened for business in recent years all over Charleston. However, three of the closest breweries located just steps from each other on Summers Street have decided to join forces and take advantage of the growing popularity of locally produced beer. Brewer’s Row is the name of the newly created craft beer district in the heart of Charleston and is a collaboration between Fife Street Brewing, Short Story Brewing and Bad Shepard Beer Company to highlight each business and draw the attention of craft beer lovers from everywhere. Visitors wanting to get the full Brewer’s Row experience can get a passport from any of the businesses, get it stamped after trying a beer at each stop and then collect a Brewer’s Row themed pint glass.

Fife Street Brewing

Fife Street Brewing has quickly become a fan favorite for its beers whose names pay homage to the area, like the “Charlie West Coast IPA” and “Summers Street Wheat,” but also for their menu that has become most known for its creative and delicious grilled cheeses. Each sandwich also comes with a recommended beer pairing. Try the Hot Bologna with the Charleston Beer or the Crab Rangoon with a Kanawha Kettle Sours. This brewery also regularly hosts events like live music performances, trivia nights and comedy shows.

Short Story Brewing

Based out of Rivesville, WV, this family-owned craft brewery has recently opened a taproom to showcase its large selection of malts, sours, hops, darks and other beer varieties in Charleston. A very exciting collaboration taking place here is between Short Story Brewing and Lefty’s Place, a Morgantown favorite pizza spot. Through this partnership, Short Story will bring Lefty’s Detroit-style thick-crust pizza and tavern-style thin crust to the Metro Valley. This will provide an excellent pairing of hand-crafted beer and hand-made pizza for visitors of Brewer’s Row.

Bad Shepherd Beer Company

The eldest of the three breweries, Bad Shepherd Beer Company currently offers 12 beers on tap and has the motto “Stay Wild.” They draw inspiration from their Appalachian roots when crafting new beers and take pride in leading guests down a “refreshingly weird path of beer exploration.” It is also located directly next to its sister business Black Sheep Burrito and Brews. Here you can enjoy the craft beer brewed on-site and the unique and appetizing burritos served by the restaurant. Black Sheep’s menu also offers cocktails made with house liquors.

Charleston

While in Charleston for Brewer’s Row, make the most of your experience and check out the best area offers. Charleston is the heart of West Virginia’s urban scene and has many options for nightlife and entertainment. Just a street over is the beautiful and iconic Capitol Street. Although the menus of the members of Brewer’s Row are elevated far above your typical brewery’s offerings, visitors should certainly also check out the local favorites along Capitol Street. They include Pies and Pints and Adelphia Sports Bar and & Grille, two Charleston classics whose menus pair perfectly with local craft beers. If you’re still looking for craft beverages, Mountain State Distillery offers samples of their hand-crafted small-batch spirits.
