Beginner Bucket List: 5 Kid (& Newbie) Friendly Slopes

Almost Heaven has a plethora of difficult trails but the state also has some of the best beginner ski schools and slopes that kids (or slope newbies) can enjoy in the wintertime. From beginners to advanced, new skiers can test their skills on these gentle slopes perfect for those learning the ropes!

1. Country Roads

Winterplace Ski Resort

Ghent, WV

The Country Roads trail at Winterplace Ski Resort is the perfect balance of difficulty and fun for a younger skier to enjoy. It leads you directly to the resort’s private learning area where they teach a multitude of lessons for guests. These lessons include group lessons, private lessons and private family lessons for all ages and difficulties that are run by some of the best instructors in the state. They also offer Skiwee and Snow Explorers which is perfect for children ages 6 through 12 years old.

2. Easy Does It

Timberline Mountain Resort

Davis, WV

Located at the middle of the mountain, Easy Does It is a wonderful trail for beginners looking to try out some adventure. The beautiful trail leads straight down to the main lodge where families can mingle. Timberline Mountain offers a Snow Sports School that includes children full and half-day lessons, private lessons and an introductory group lesson for first-timers. Come visit this newly renovated mountain and have a trained instructor improve your family’s skills on the slopes!

3. Powder Monkey

Snowshoe Mountain Resort

Snowshoe, WV

Powder Monkey is one of the best kid-friendly slopes at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. The trail allows children and their families to descend to the bottom of the mountain to Shavers Lake. Snowshoe has some of the most pristine slopes in the state and can make for a great Almost Heaven memory. The resort offers Pre-Ski School, mommy and me lessons, kids lessons, junior lessons, intro to snow lessons, group lessons, private lessons and an advanced mountain clinic. Schedule your child (or yourself) a lesson where all can learn to shred on the snow!

4. Gandalf’s Glade

White Grass Ski Touring Center

Davis, WV

White Grass Ski Touring Center‘s Gandalf’s Glade is a wonderful place for adventurers who are just learning how to cross-country ski to improve their skills. This inexpensive family-friendly ski touring center offers beginner lessons, mini lessons and advanced lessons. White Grass is in close proximity to some of West Virginia’s most treasured high country. Take a trip to White Grass for a scenic skiing adventure for the family!

5. Sissy Schuss

Canaan Valley Resort State Park

Davis, WV

The Sissy Schuss trail at Canaan Valley Resort State Park is an easy trail that leads to multiple shelters and meeting spots. On this trail, skiers can test out their new skills from either past experience or from a recent lesson at the park. Critters Crawl is a first-time skier area where guests can take lessons and learn the basics The resort offers group lessons, family/friends lessons and private/semi-private lessons. Take a family/friends lesson and enjoy learning the basics together at this gorgeous winter getaway!
