Roll on up: ATV-friendly businesses in Hatfield-McCoy Country

Traveler Tip: The towns of Gilbert, Man, Matewan, Delbarton, and Williamson are all “ATV- Friendly Communities,” where locals and guests can ride ATVs, dirt bikes, & UTVs from daylight to dark (11 p.m. in Gilbert) within city limits.

Cabins and Lodges

In Bramwell, the Pocahontas ATV Resort offers a variety of cabin options with full and half kitchens, along with a community lodge room where you and your group can swap trail tales. The resort is located 3.5 miles from Pocahontas Trailhead and visitors can easily connect to the Indian Ridge Trails and Pinnacle Creek Trails.

The Mud Pit ATV Resort in Bluefield has riverfront cabin rentals, along with a homestyle cooking restaurant and an ATV-friendly, on-site convenience store specifically designed for the ATV community, offering fuel, ice and other supplies for your adventure. The Pocahontas Trail system is only 1.5 miles down an ATV-approved road, so you never even have to leave your machine.

Located within Indian Ridge Trail System, at Wild Willy’s ATV Rezort guests can choose from one of the six cabins, complete with a small kitchen, private parking area, fire ring and charcoal grill. The cabins are located next to a mountain stream stocked with native fish and connectors to both Pocahontas Trails and Pinnacle Creek Trails.

Big Bear Lodge in Gilbert is perfect for large groups and extended stays. The four different private properties give direct access to Rockhouse Trail Systems, so guests can park their cars and jump right on their machines. Within the city limits, riders can drive their ATVs until 11 p.m. Also in Gilbert are the Twin Hollow Campground and Cabins, with four different cabin options, acres of onsite RV and ATV camping, and direct access to the Rock House, Devil Anse, & Buffalo Mountain Trail Systems.

Hotels and Inns

Just 200 feet away from the from the Buffalo Mountain Trailhead, the Blue Goose Inn offers room options outside the traditional two queen / one king options. Ranging from two to five bedrooms, as well as the Coal Miner Den with four rooms and eight beds – the Blue Goose is sure to accommodate any size group.

If you are looking for simpler accommodations for a long stay, Candlewood Suites in Logan come equipped with a microwave, stove, refrigerator and kitchen sink.

Restaurants

Looking for some good food but don’t want to leave your machine back at the camp? Ride on up to one of the many ATV friendly restaurants in the area. For freshly smoked BBQ topped with homemade sauce, check out Wingo’s Grill in Matewan. Keith’s Bar & Grille in Man specializes in traditional American fare with a West Virginia spin (try the Hillbilly Philly fries).

If you’re visiting Logan, Morrison’s Drive Inn is a must stop for their hot dogs (named #1 by the WV Hot Dog Blog!). For a more “formal” dining experience, check out Chirico’s Ristorante for some of the best Italian in southern West Virginia.
