An Apple a Day in Almost Heaven 🍎

Every autumn, West Virginia’s orchards come to life with a wide selection of apple varieties. From sprawling pick-your-own orchards and hands-on fun farms to apple-themed delicacies and seasonal events, Almost Heaven is the perfect place to experience the magic of autumn.

Golden Delicious Apple

Did you know that in 1912 the Golden Delicious apple was first discovered in Clay County, WV? Thanks to this apple’s delicious flavor and crisp texture it was designated the West Virginia state fruit in 1995!
Every third weekend in September a special festival is held in the Mountain State, the Golden Delicious Festival. This festival is a four-day heritage celebration of the birthplace of the Golden Delicious apple combined with fun for all ages with live music, food, rides and much more

Apple Butter Festival

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Berkeley Springs Apple Butter Festival —  a tradition that celebrates a fall staple that can be found on nearly every West Virginia table.  Visit during the weekend of October 10-11, 2025 and be welcomed by the warm aroma of fresh apple butter cooking. Browse over 200 local vendors, taste apple-inspired dishes, savor local sips in the beer garden, sing along to the live performances by local musicians and enjoy the parade. 

Orr’s Farm Market

Home to a sweeping orchard, guests can pick their own Almost Heaven apples at Orr’s Farm Market in Martinsburg from August through late October. Located less than a two-hour drive from Washington, D.C., this spot boasts Golden Delicious Apples — West Virginia’s official fruit. A must-stop for a family day of fun, Orr’s offers scenic hayrides, a barnyard petting zoo, playground, farmer’s market, on-site bakery and more!

A trip to the charming town of Thomas is not complete without a stop by Macy Lou’s Gourmet Apple Company for the most popular candy apples in the state. Here, larger-than-life apples covered in a variety of rich chocolate and candy coatings are the name of the game — so irresistible that visitors find themselves returning time and time again.
