This 57-foot waterfall is unique because of its dark-tinted waters, which are stained from the tannic acid of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. Ready for a hike? Climb down the stairs to catch up upclose glimpse of the majestic falls. Looking for a simpler path? Follow the wooden, ADA-accessible walkway to a platform that boasts an incredible view of the crashing cascades along the Gentle Trail. For further exploration of Blackwater Falls State Park, enjoy more than 20 miles of hiking trails that lead you to other nearby natural wonders like Elakala Falls, Lindy Point and Pendleton Point Overlook.

    Cathedral Falls

    Gauley Bridge, West Virginia

    Cathedral Falls of Gauley Bridge stands 60 feet tall and possesses a fantasy-like atmosphere. Watch the water trickle over sandstone edges and shingle cliffs. Cathedral Falls is easy to access from a parking lot just off of Route 60, with a pull-off across the road for extra parking. You will also be within a 20-minute drive from the charming little town of Fayetteville and the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

      Glade Creek Grist Mill Falls

      High Falls of the Cheat

      Gladly, West Virginia

      Winding through Shavers Mountain in the Potomac Highlands off Route 44, the High Falls of the Cheat is one of West Virginia’s most unique waterfalls. Find these cascades along the High Falls Trail, which provides a beautiful, yet challenging hike. Though these falls stand shorter than most others in the state, their location boasts an impressive width – with cascades roaring across the mountainsides over a horseshoe bend of rocks.

      Coonskin Grotto

      Charleston, West Virginia

      Hidden in Coonskin Park, just outside Charleston, is a hidden waterfall – known as the Coonskin Grotto. These short cascades, spilling into a shallow cave and shaded by a sandstone overhang, give this setting a fantasy-like appearance. Make your way past the stone monument at the trailhead, continue left on Alice Knight Memorial Trail and follow the red blazes for about a third of a mile before arriving at the Grotto. Be sure to wear hiking boots, as the rocky terrain can be tricky.
