The Hatfield-McCoy Mountains region is rooted in history and has the perfect blend of adventures. Even if you’re not into the ATV lifestyle, you’re still in for a treat for what these mountains have to offer.
Here are four reasons to make a trip to the Hatfield-McCoy Mountains this season in Almost Heaven.
The History
The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System gets its name from the region in Southern West Virginia where most of the world-famous Hatfield-McCoy feuding happened. This feud took place along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River from 1863 to 1891 and was between the Hatfield family from West Virginia and the McCoy family from Kentucky. Hatfield-McCoy Mountains are rich in coal mining and were one of the world’s busiest coal mining regions in the early 1900’s and is now deemed part of the National Coal Heritage Area.
The town of Bramwell introduces history lovers to the National Coal Heritage Area Interpretive Center, a museum that showcases relics and exhibits of West Virginia’s coal history. You will find photos of former Bramwell coal barons, their wives, memorabilia of the millionaire days and much more here. In Matewan, the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum sits at the site of a historic battle that erupted in May of 1920, setting into motion a chain of events that led to the largest armed uprising in the United States since the Civil War. Here, you can explore the largest exhibition of Mine Wars history anywhere in the United States.
To explore more of the local history, visit the Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce, home of the famous Coal House in Williamson. This structure was built in 1933 from 65 tons of bituminous coal and stands at the corner of East 2nd Avenue and Court Street.
It’s a Playground for Off-Road Vehicles
If you have an itch to get off the beaten path, then you are in the right place. The Hatfield-McCoy Trail Systems span across Southern West Virginia and boast epic off-roading adventures. With 10 trail systems racking up to more than 1,000 twisty miles to explore, you and your ATV or side-by-side will feel right at home.
Let the miles climb on trails like Devil Anse, Buffalo Mountain, Bearwallow, Rock House and several others. You’ll find that many of the trails lead to ATV-friendly towns, so fuel, food and lodging will always be at the ready. Take a ride on a trail and get a feel for the thrills of Appalachia.
Relentless Recreation
You will find everything from adventures on the water to hikes between the hills. Beech Fork State Park in Cabell County has more than 14 miles of hiking and biking trails, a lake that’s perfect for boating and fishing as well as other activities. Extend your adventures by renting one of the many on-site cabins or pitch a tent. Chief Logan State Park is another perfect destination to enjoy the great outdoors. Take your bicycle and ride on 18 miles of trails, go mini golfing, cast a line or just kick back. Lodging, cabins and campground sites with electric hookups are also available. Another popular activity is Hatfield & McCoy Airboat Tours, which offers boat tours that show you the area’s rich history and speeds by historic locations of the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud.
The Local Flavors
The Hatfield-McCoy Mountains region is never short on good eats. Starters Sports Bar & Grill has just what you’re looking for if you’re in the mood for loaded nachos, chicken wings and so much more. In Logan, enjoy a world-famous hotdog or a plate of homemade onion rings at Morrison’s Drive Inn. Chirico’s Ristorante has delicious pasta and other authentic Italian dishes that will blow you away. For a sweet treat, stop by another staple in Logan, Nu Era Bakery. Wingo’s Grill is a Matewan favorite, specializing in smoked pork BBQ, ribs, steaks and more.
