Celebrate D & E’s Athletics
Davis & Elkins College alumnus and former trustee Hank Steinbrecher will be the featured speaker for Celebrate D & E’s Athletics, the focus of the second day of inauguration week activities, at 7 p.m. Monday, March 27 in Myles Center for the Arts. Following the theme of “The Journey” for the inauguration of Davis & Elkins College’s 15th president Chris A. Wood, Steinbrecher’s speech is titled “Lessons Learned from My Journey.” As Secretary General of U.S. Soccer from 1990-2000, Steinbrecher was instrumental in bringing soccer to prominence in the United States and oversaw the staging of two of the most successful Men’s and Women’s World Cups in the United States. The event is free and open to the public.
Celebrate D & E’s Arts
Celebrate D & E’s Arts, a presentation of Davis & Elkins College’s performing arts, along with displays and demonstrations of students’ work in the visual arts, will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 28 in The Joni and Buck Smith Arts Forum in Myles Center for the Arts. Student performances are scheduled by the Davis & Elkins College Concert Choir, the Theatre Department and Appalachian Ensemble. Afterward, guests are invited to a student art exhibit, studio tours and screen printing demonstrations in the lower level of Myles Center for the Arts. The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the five-day celebration marking the inauguration of the College’s 15th President Chris A. Wood.
Augusta Dance
The Mountain Dance Trail, a heritage tourism project of the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College, will host its monthly square dance on Friday, February 10, in Myles Center for the Arts Pit Dance Studio on the College campus. The event will feature music by Gerry Milnes and friends, with Mary Alice Milnes calling square dances. A beginners’ workshop is set for 7:45 p.m. and the dance starts at 8 p.m. All dances are beginner and family friendly and participants don’t need to come with a dance partner. Admission is $6 for general public, $4 for students and AmeriCorps members, and free to Davis & Elkins College students, faculty and staff. Flintknapping Demonstration
A flintknapping demonstration, led by archaeologist Richie Rosencrance, will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 11 in The Stirrup Gallery in Myles Center for the Arts on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. Flintknapping is the production of stone tools most commonly known as arrowheads. The demonstration will include a discussion on raw materials, knapping tools and techniques, types of stone tools and prehistoric lifeways. Anyone who has artifacts they would like to learn more about is encouraged to bring the items to the session for Rosencrance to examine. There is no fee to attend. Public Talk Unpacking Privilege
Authors and international speakers Tiffany Jana and Matthew Freeman will present a talk titled Unpacking Privilege at 10 a.m. Monday, January 16 in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. Open to the public, the event is part of D&E’s First-Year Symposium focusing on democracy. Admission is free.
