You must try these 11 AMAZING pies in West Virginia

The pepperoni roll may well be West Virginia’s state food, but we also have some desserts that have reached iconic status. People travel from far and wide to get a slice of one of these pies. (Or better yet, a whole pie!)

  1. Susie’s Pies and More are literally homemade—right out of Susie’s house. The baker then takes her sweet treats to the Charles Town Farmers Market and the Berkeley Springs Farmers Market to sell. Fans will tell you her fruit pies are to die for, from classic pairings like strawberry rhubarb to unique offering like pear ginger.
  2. The coconut cream is a dream at Apple Annie’s Bakery, where pies are made daily from scratch. This Morgantown-based company makes a variety of homemade pies (butterscotch is another customer favorite) as well as cookies, doughnuts and cakes. Not only that … they’ve expanded and added a menu of soups, salads, burgers and sandwiches.
  3. Best known as the place where John F. Kennedy dined during a campaign stop in 1960, Jim’s Steak and Spaghetti House is nearly as famous for its annual Strawberry Pie Week, which has been going on for more than 30 years now. Starting the first Tuesday after Mother’s Day, folks begin lining up around the block in Huntington for a slice of this sinfully sweet, limited-edition berry dessert. But if you can’t make it for Strawberry Pie Week, there are plenty of other scrumptious pies to tempt your tummy, like the ever-popular banana crème or coconut crème.
  4. The Poky Dot is famous for its Humongous Banana Split—a dessert so big that a prize is awarded for any two people who can finish off the dessert within the allotted time frame—so it’s only fitting that they have a pie go with it. Aunt Mary’s Banana Split Pie starts with a graham cracker crust layered with crushed pineapple, strawberries, almond cream filling, cherries, bananas, whipped topping and crushed peanuts.
  5. Walk into Mayberry’s and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped onto the set of “The Andy Griffith Show.” Photos of Andy, Opie and Barney hang on the wall, while episodes of the popular show play on the TV. But Aunt B’s Bakery is where it’s at. The bakery inside this Hurricane restaurant makes a wide variety of cakes and pies. They’re all good, but if you get a chance to snap up a creamy whipped graham cracker pie, take it!
  6. 88 Restaurant & Lounge at the Bicentennial Inn in Buckhannon is the place to be for a quiet, casual meal or live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. An extensive list of menu items covers breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and bar appetizers. But when it comes time to choose your dessert, save room for their award-winning buttermilk pie, served drizzled with caramel sauce.
  7. You can work up an appetite whitewater rafting in the New River Gorge. Stop by Cathedral Café to treat yourself for that hard workout. The Fayetteville shop serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a variety of desserts and fresh-brewed coffee to wash it down with. The peanut butter mousse pie is a perennial favorite!
  8. The Dining Room in Inwood boasts about its good country cookin,’ but feel free to check it out for yourself. The restaurant serves up a rotating menu of pies all year long. Try a slice of fresh blueberry or apple pie, served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  9. At Oliver’s Pies in Wheeling, owner Jim Oliver hand rolls his crusts and makes all his creams and custards from scratch. You’ll find a wide selection of fruit pies, cream pies and seasonal favorites. Stop by the Centre Market location and ask for a slice of old-fashioned egg custard (also available sugar-free upon request) or, if you’re planning a seafood feast from Coleman’s Fish Market, Oliver’s homemade Key lime pie will complement it perfectly.
  10. King Tut Drive-In, a staple in the Beckley area since the 1950s, is known for their homemade pies made fresh daily and sold by the slice. (With a day’s notice they can make you a whole pie.) Coconut cream is the most popular, but guests also love their apple, chocolate cream, cherry cream and pumpkin (available October and November only).
  11. With locations in Milton, Teays Valley and Cross Lanes, Barnyard BBQ has cornered the market on the smoked pork business, but their homemade desserts are just as delicious. Top off that plate of ribs or pulled pork sandwich with a slice of Ma Maw’s lemon meringue pie.
