Imagine a crisp, fall day with the sound of leaves rustling around you on a relaxing walk or bicycle ride. In Almost Heaven, you can turn that imagination into an unforgettable adventure on nearly 600 miles of railroad tracks – repurposed into scenic rail trails.

Whether you are looking for a smooth cruise on two wheels or a peaceful stroll with the whole family, you will find all of that and more at these six West Virginia rail trails.

Mon River Rail Trail System

Morgantown, West Virginia – 48 miles

The Mon River Rail Trail System consists of three rail trails: Mon River, Caperton and Deckers Creek Rail Trails. This connects Marion, Monongalia, and Preston counties in North Central West Virginia. Enjoy 48 miles of walking, cycling and jogging with a cool fall breeze. In Morgantown and Star City, eight miles of trail are paved, which also allows for in-line skating.

Allegheny Highlands Trail

Elkins, West Virginia – 24.2 miles

Following the original route of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway, the Allegheny Highlands Trail (AHT) boasts 24.2 miles of beautiful trail walking and bicycling. You will get goosebumps from looking at the stunning panoramic views throughout the trail. This path runs from the city of Elkins to the charming mountain town of Thomas, which is beautiful.

North Bend Rail Trail

Cairo, West Virginia – 72 miles

Part of the 5,500-mile American Discovery Trail, the North Bend Rail Trail, spans 72-miles, crosses 36 bridges and passes through ten tunnels. On this trail, which was part of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, hikers and bikers will enjoy passing by beautiful farmland and passing through the “haunted” Silver Run Tunnel.

Meadow River Rail Trail

Nallen, West Virginia – 9.2 miles

The Meadow River Rail Trail is a developing rail trail that meanders along the Meadow River through Fayette and Greenbrier counties. This trail follows a former CSX spur line built in 1907 that once serviced a lumber company. From the Nallen Trailhead at its northern end, the rail trail runs along the western border of Fayette County.

Greenbrier River Trail

Marlinton, West Virginia – 78 Miles

The Greenbrier River Trail is always a rewarding choice to explore as the trail passes through small towns, crosses 35 bridges and goes through two tunnels. Discover the hidden parts of the Potomac Highlands Region by hiking, biking and even horseback riding. Once part of the famed Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, this trail spans 78 miles and takes travelers through Calvin Price State Forest, Watoga State Park and Seneca State Forest.

Wheeling Heritage Trail

Wheeling, West Virginia – 16.5 miles

The Wheeling Heritage Trail provides 16.5 miles of incredible twists and turns, accompanied by beautiful signs along the way that tell Wheeling’s story. This trail takes you through the city of Wheeling, passes along the east bank of the Ohio River and through the Hempfield Tunnel, which was built in 1904.
