This November, embrace the adventure you never knew you were craving and explore one of these featured West Virginia rail trails.

Caperton/Mon River/Deckers Creek Rail Trail

The Caperton Trail, Mon River Rail-Trail and Deckers Creek Rail-Trail connect to create a seamless 48-mile journey through Mountaineer Country. Explore the scenic views of Morgantown’s creeks, rock outcroppings, and farmlands, as well as urban trailside connections to city parks, restaurants, playgrounds, and shops. The Mon River Rail-Trail follows the Monongahela River from the Pennsylvania state line to Prickett’s Fort State Park. Whether you’re on an easy fall walk or pushing for a fast-paced journey on your road bike, you find much to love about these connecting rail trails.

Allegheny Highlands Trail

Following the original route of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway, the Allegheny Highlands Trail boasts 24.2 miles of stunning panoramic views. From the southern Highland Park trailhead in Elkins, the trail gradually ascends for about 15 miles, passing by Pheasant and Polecat Knob mountains. The rural views and mountainous backgrounds will overload your camera roll with stunning photos. Beyond the mountains, the trail descends more steeply and approaches the small town of Parsons.

Elk River Trail

How does 73 miles of epic scenery sound for a bike ride? The Elk River Trail is heaven for your bicycle and meanders the Elk River for 52 miles, promising relaxing views no matter where you are. This rail trail also runs along the 18-mile Buffalo Creek Rails-with-Trail and the 102-mile Elk River Water Trail, spanning Braxton, Clay and Kanawha Counties. The trail is open to open for use by walkers, hikers, runners, cyclists and horseback riders. Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes are also welcome.

Greenbrier River Rail Trail

A fantastic multi-use trail to discover by hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The Ā Greenbrier River Trail is always a beautiful experience as the trail passes through small towns, crosses 35 bridges, and goes through two tunnels. Ā Once part of the famed Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, the trail spans 78 miles and takes travelers through Calvin Price State Forest,Ā Watoga State ParkĀ andĀ Seneca State Forest.

North Bend Rail Trail

Part of the 5,500-mile American Discovery Trail, the Ā North Bend Rail Trail, spans 72-miles, crosses 36 bridges and passes through ten historic tunnels. On this trail, which was part of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, hikers and cyclists enjoy passing by beautiful farmland and slicing through the cold, ā€œhauntedā€ draft from the Silver Run Tunnel, a spooky stop on the West Virginia Paranormal Trail! This trail is also perfect for geocaching, horseback riding, fishing and cold camping.

Wheeling Heritage Trail

The Wheeling Heritage Trail offers 16.5 miles of smooth bike riding and relaxing walking. Consider this a self-guided tour of Wheeling’s history as this trail takes you through the city, passes along the east bank of the Ohio River and through the haunted Hempfield Tunnel, a stop on the West Virginia Paranormal Trail. From downtown Wheeling, the Wheeling Creek Trail heads east to Elm Grove. This segment of the Wheeling Heritage Trail is less urban and meanders along a wooded corridor. This is your ticket to exploring some of the most historic features of the Northern Panhandle!
