Fall Foliage Road Trip Along U.S. 48 and U.S. 219

The stage is set, and the awe-inspiring fall foliage of West Virginia is ready to put on a show. Vibrant hues will transform the rolling hills and mountains of Almost Heaven, and what better way to enjoy it than from one of the state’s iconic country roads?

Drive along U.S. 48 and U.S. 219 and make a few fun stops along the way.

Start in the small town of Wardensville. The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests offer an abundance of natural beauty and outdoor recreation– with hundreds of miles of hiking trails, camping, hunting and fishing. Lost River State Park in nearby Mathias has 3,934 acres of woods, the perfect getaway for nature lovers looking to soak in the beauty of autumn. Lost River is also known for the Cranny Crow overlook on top of Big Ridge Mountain, which offers a commanding view of five counties.

While you’re in the area, you have to make a trip to the Wardensville Garden Market for farm-fresh produce, meat and from-scratch baked goods. Another local favorite location is the Lost River Trading Post. The front of the store offers an eclectic café with West Virginia made goods, craft beer and wine, while the back half of the shop is an antique and art gallery.

Continue to the charming mountain towns of Davis and Thomas where you will find iconic attractions like Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley Resort State Park and the Monongahela National Forest, home to Dolly Sods Wilderness.

Local shops, art galleries, restaurants and breweries will certainly keep visitors occupied between outdoor adventures. Cooper House Bed and Cocktail, The Billy Motel and Mountain Primrose B&B all have their own distinct flair with comfort to match in Thomas, while Canaan Valley Resort features plenty of comfortable rooms and sprawling grounds with a variety of amenities.
