Where You Can Catch Stunning Fall Foliage Right Now in West Virginia – Week of 09/24/2025

Canaan Valley, Fall, Road, Aerial view

Do you feel a gentle gust of fall air this week? The changing leaves are calling you to glimpse their best colors before it’s too late! Forecasted rainfall is expected to boost vibrant foliage conditions, and higher elevation points in Almost Heaven continue to blossom with shades of red, orange and gold.

For week two of tracking West Virginia’s fall foliage on our Live Leaf Map, head to these beautiful spots and embrace some of the Mountain State’s best views in fall hues. 🍁

Preston County 🥞

Visit Preston County in Kingwood and see what this charming slice of the Potomac Highlands is all about. From September 23-28, 2025, the annual Buckwheat Festival celebrates the region’s buckwheat farming heritage and offers visitors homemade pancakes, live entertainment, carnival rides, and much more. For more fall foliage-focused exploring, head to Cathedral State Park and explore 133 acres of serene hiking trails. You’ll spot color-changing trees standing over 90 feet tall and enjoy the sound of crunching leaves beneath your feet.

Canaan Valley Resort State Park 🌅

Catch a birds-eye view of the Allegheny Mountains and the surrounding valley from the Scenic Chairlift Ride at Canaan Valley Resort State Park. For a chance to see both the vibrant trees and an epic sunset, hike to Bald Knob or hop on later in the evening (the last chair loads 30 minutes before the sunset).

Extend your stay at the lodge and create more fall memories the next day. While in the region, capture the perfect Almost Heaven Swing photo and post it on social media! 📸

Just under a 20-minute drive away, visit Davis and treat yourself to a delicious homemade dinner at Milo’s Cafe or Sirianni’s. TipTop in Thomas is the spot for delicious seasonal pastries and pumpkin spice lattes. ☕️

Dolly Sods Wilderness 🥾

Located in the heart of TuckerGrant and Randolph counties, Dolly Sods Wilderness  is known for its unique, high-elevation plateau across 17,000 acres. Hike through some of the Monongahela National Forest’s thickest wooded areas. This is the perfect opportunity to go backpacking with the perfect autumn backdrop. You will spot many shades of red, orange and yellow leaves glazing the maple and birch trees – scattered across all 47 miles of trails.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park 🚂

Peep for turning leaves while turning back the clock when you visit Pocahontas County. This is your chance to enjoy some of West Virginia’s most spectacular fall views, and you can experience that on a vintage steam-driven locomotive at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. After your fall railroad excursion, you can also explore the Cass Historical Theater and Historical Museum. Shays Restaurant is also on site and makes a great pitstop for lunch and dinner.
