West Virginia has all of the ingredients for a memorable spring break.
Here are some great mountain getaway ideas:
1. Zipline
Ziplining gives families some wild spring break stories! ACE Adventure Resort, River Expeditions and Adventures on the Gorge have a variety of ziplines, including zipping in the dark or through the New River Gorge forests.
2. Hike and explore
You can hike just about anywhere you turn in West Virginia. West Virginia State Parks has a Hiking Program with hundreds of trails to explore. Take a geocaching trip to add a little challenge to your trek.
3. Head underground
Underground adventure is an experience like no other. You won’t need any special equipment for the hands-on learning at Lost World Caverns. Take a guided 4-hour tour into this cave full of wonder. The Natural History Museum adjacent to the gift shop has a large collection of dinosaur and fossil replicas.
Organ Cave is full of natural wonders like bats, rock formations and fossils. It is also famous because 1,100 Confederate soldiers hid here for 3 winters from the neighboring Yankees. It contains more than 45 miles of mapped passageways with more than 200 leads that have yet to be mapped and surveyed.
Since both of these caves are in southeastern West Virginia, you can visit both on one trip!
4. Hop on horseback
If relaxing and taking a slow ride along the trails is what your family loves, West Virginia is the place to be. Mountain Trail Rides, with Canaan Valley Resort as its backdrop, will take you out on the trails year-round. The rugged trails are only used for horseback, so you can take in the scenery, which may include a glimpse of some deer or other wildlife.
Go horseback riding at the Oglebay Stables for a memorable experience. Trails rides are available for riders of all ages and skill levels and conducted on wide trails through the woods.
