West Virginia is filled with untouched, wide-open public land. With six national parks, 45 state parks and forest and endless opportunity for outdoor adventure, escape to almost heaven. Let your mind run free here in the mountains.
One thing you don’t have to go far to find in the state is a hiking trail.
With over 1,500 in the state, there’s something for everyone to love. The North Bend Rail Trail is a 72-mile trail that follows an old B&O railroad line. On your hike you can expect to find bridges, tunnels and lots of shaded canopies thanks to the trees that line the trail. If you want to see an iconic West Virginia landmark, try hiking the Long Point Trail in Fayetteville. At the trails end, you’ll be eye level with the New River Gorge Bridge and it’s pretty unbelievable! West Virginia’s state parks and forests also offer various hiking trails, from easy loops to more challenging climbs.
Or dust off those bikes and try a new trail ride in West Virginia.
Visit the Greenbrier River Trail, another popular option for hiking, biking or even horseback riding. The 78-mile former railroad is the longest of its kind in West Virginia. This trail passes through some of the most remote areas in the state, too. If you want to truly unplug, head towards Green Bank. It’s in the National Radio Quiet Zone so even your cell phone won’t work! Up for a challenge? Try the Gauley Mountain Trail in Slaty Fork. This mountain biking trail is about 11 miles round trip but is sure to excite your senses.
Find an escape in your own backyard.
Need a simple escape? Take a walk in the woods with your kids and learn more about what makes West Virginia almost heaven. You might come across wildlife like white-tail deer or bright red cardinals. On your hike, you’re also likely to find wildflowers like trillium or fawn lilies.
