Designations highlight the Mountain State’s rich culture and unique history
Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Tourism today announced that eight West Virginia sites have joined the National Register of Historic Places. Each of the following eight historical sites was approved for submission to the National Park Service by the West Virginia Archives and History Commission at its November 21, 2025 meeting.
“We are so excited to share that these eight new West Virginia sites have been added as new points of interest on the National Register of Historic Places,” said West Virginia Department of Tourism Deputy Secretary Ennis Smith. “Each one of these places helps tell the story of our beautiful state, and it’s a privilege to continue sharing that with the rest of the world.”
New Listings
Citizens National Bank of Belington| Barbour County
- The historic Citizens National Bank of Belington served Barbour County during the early 20th century.
George McComas House | Cabell County
- Part of the historic Barboursville walking tour, this Queen Anne-style home was built in 1895 and is known for its asymmetric design, gabled tin roof and distinctive tent-shaped turret, and wrap-around porch.
The Capon Bridge | Hampshire County
- An iconic green bridge stretching over the Cacapon River, the Capon Bridge was originally built in 1933 and underwent significant rehabilitation in 2021—2022 to preserve its historic integrity.
Hutchinson-Parsons-Fulk Mail Pouch Barn | Jackson County
- The Hutchinson-Parsons-Fulk Mail Pouch Barn, located on Route 21 in Sandyville, is a well-preserved example of the iconic Mail Pouch tobacco advertisements painted on barns by the Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company, a tradition that ran from the late 1800s to 1993.
Old Hill Cemetery | Lewis County
- Also known as the historic Arnold Cemetery, this spot was established in 1820 as the town’s first burial ground, holding notable early settlers and Civil War veterans and is home to a massive historic Yellow Poplar Tree estimated to be over 200 years old.
Wilson Mail Pouch Barn | Mason County
- This historic Mail Pouch Barn lies near the town of Leon, between Charleston and Point Pleasant.
Henrietta Dismukes Hospital Nurses’ Home | McDowell County
- The Henrietta Dismukes Hospital served African American coal miners and their families from 1929 to 1932 and was the largest privately owned African American hospital in the country at the time. The hospital burned in 2013, and all that remains is the nurses’ home.
