Hunting in West Virginia is a time-honored tradition that has been passed down for generations. In fact, there are even special days dedicated to youth hunters. From antlerless deer and turkey to squirrel and waterfowl, youth hunters can take advantage of these days and learn more about the tradition of hunting in the Mountain State.
Youth Hunting
The Mountain State is an incredible place for youth hunters to learn the proper way to hunt. From its scenic landscape to its variety of wildlife, West Virginia provides incredible hunting grounds throughout the state. It’s important to know that youth hunters must be:
- At least 8 years old and less than 18 years old; youth hunters age 15-17 must comply with all licensing requirements
- Those between the ages of 8-14 must be accompanied by a licensed adult, who must also wear 400 square inches of blaze orange, cannot carry a gun, a cross bow or bow, and must remain near enough to the youth to render advice and assistance.
Youth Hunting Days
Throughout the year youth hunters have the ability hunt on special days dedicated just for them. Those days include:
- Antlerless deer only – Oct. 21-22 and Dec. 26-27, 2023
- Bear – Sept. 16-17, 2023
- Turkey – April 13-14, 2023
Hunting Spots
Looking for some places to hunt? Here are five spots known for incredible hunting opportunities:
- Mountain Meadow Hunting Preserve in Greenville is a privately owned and operated high fenced hunting preserve that offers big game hunts for trophy whitetail deer, fallow deer, red stag, wild boar and buffalo.
- Land Baron Outfitters in Palestine is one of West Virginia’s best hunting farms. Land Baron Outfitters provides whitetail deer and turkey hunts with exclusive access to over 236 acres of property.
- Wilderness Ridge Farm located in Southside provides 100 acres of private hunting on their family farm as well the opportunity to lodge in their 1,250 sq. ft. log cabin. At Wilderness Ridge Farm you can hunt for whitetail deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel, waterfowl and other small game.
