Eastern Panhandle 101

History

Just a short distance from DC, the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia is a mecca for history, scenery and small-town charm. Here, you can step back in time and visit Harpers Ferry National Historic Park and tour the U.S. Armory and Arsenal held by John Brown and his army for three days in 1859. Stroll down the streets of historic Charles Town, which was founding by Charles Washington, youngest brother of George Washington. Or visit the gorgeous town of Berkeley Springs, which was incorporated in 1776 as Bath in honor of England’s spa city of Bath.

Here you can visit Berkeley Springs State Park, which is home to a historic mineral spa that has been used since colonial times. In Martinsburg, visit the home of Civil War spy and femme fatale Belle Boyd; explore the Martinsburg Roundhouse, once burned by General Stonewall Jackson; and descend into the secret tunnel in the home of a Revolutionary War general.
