Discover Stunning Lakes Over 48 Hours in the Mountain Lakes Region

Stonewall Jackson, Stonecoal, Summersville, Sutton and Burnsville—you will need more than 2 days to fully experience all the stunning lakes within this region in the center of the state. A drive on I-79 will get you started on your exploration of the Mountain Lakes travel region.

Day 1

Begin the day by having breakfast at one of Stonewall Resort’s fabulous signature restaurants—Stillwaters. Fill your plate at the gourmet buffet and head outside to enjoy your meal and the view of Stonewall Jackson Lake, or choose a seat inside to avoid the elements.

Get out on the water by renting an aqua cycle, kayak, stand up paddle board or paddle boat from the recreation center. If water sports aren’t your style, the marina on property has pontoon and CraigCat mini power boats available for rent as well.

Venture into the city of Weston to grab a bite to eat for lunch and sight see. Snap a photo or take a full-blown tour of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Make your way to Hickory House, a family-owned, casual barbecue joint where the meat is slow cooked over hickory wood. It’s sure to appease your taste buds.

Afterward, you can’t miss out on watching beautiful hand-blown glass items be made right before your eyes. Appalachian Glass has glass blowing demonstrations during most of their business hours. While you’re there, buy a stunning souvenir or gift for a loved one.

Travel a short distance back to the resort for an evening cruise on the lake. The Little Sorrel gives complimentary rides to guests. Soak in the scenery all around you and enjoy a cocktail while you do so.

Then take the shuttle to Lightburns for dinner. The restaurant is adjacent to the Arnold Palmer golf course and has the best view around of the lake and mountains.

Once you finally return to the lodge, make your way back to the patio where you started the day. Relax around the fire pit in comfy chairs, have a tasty s’more and gaze up at the clear starry sky.

Day 2

A 30-minute car ride south on I-79 will bring you to Waffle Hut off the Flatwoods exit for breakfast. Breakfast is served around the clock, so no matter what time you arrive, you can have your favorite fixings.

Travel 10 more minutes and find one of the most incredible destinations in the U.S. to rent a houseboat. The Sutton Lake Marina provides breathtaking views paired with a fun-filled day. Guests can also rent a variety of water toys from the marina such as jet skis, paddle boards and large floating water mats.

After you’ve spent some time on the water, retreat to the small beach area at Bee Run Recreation Area—a walk away from the marina. Relax on the sand or splash around in roped off swimming area there.

An evening boat ride from the Summersville Lake Marina or a dinner cruise from Sarge’s Dive Shop will give you the most stunning views during golden hour.

End the evening at Kirkwood & Isaiah Morgan Distillery. Take a tour and tasting of the vineyards, winery and distillery. Purchase a bottle of your favorite wine or whiskey to enjoy in the comfort of your home after a jam-packed 48 hours in the Mountain Lakes.
