Coal Heritage Highway
One of the 126 roads designated as a National Scenic Byway, the Coal Heritage Trail is a window into America’s past and the unique culture and industry that defined it.
Learn about the history of coal mining in West Virginia at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. Explore a preserved coal mine and experience what it would’ve been like to live in an early 20th century coal camp.
To see where wealthy coal baron’s once lived take a trip southbound to Bramwell— once home to the largest number of millionaires per capita of any town in America. You can’t miss out on the tour of homes while you’re there. The well preserved Victorian and Tudor style mansions are quite a sight to see.
Highland Scenic Highway
Spanning only 43 miles, the Highland Scenic Highway is full of gorgeous views and endless opportunities for adventure. If you enjoy fishing, stop by Summit Lake and join the local fishermen as they fish for trout, bass, and panfish.
You can even stay the night and watch the sun come up over the lake. If you prefer gazing at waterfalls, visit the Falls of Hills Creek and see the second highest waterfall in West Virginia. You can then venture to the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area. Go for a walk down the half-mile boardwalk or the six mile hiking trail to get a closer look at the unique wildlife that inhabit the five boreal-type bogs nearby.
Midland Trail Scenic Highway
The Midland Trail Scenic Highway is an 180 mile trail that stretches border to border across West Virginia, cutting through 41 different towns and communities. On your trip you’ll drive through cities such as Huntington and Charleston as well as small towns like Lewisburg and Smithers.
With such a variety of scenery, this trail has something for everyone. You can learn interesting facts about our state’s history by visiting the West Virginia State Capitol Complex, or if you are in the mood for some adventure, make a stop in the New River Gorge for your outdoor recreation fix. Known for its white-water rafting, the New River Gorge also has biking, rock climbing, zip lining, and more.
