The winners of 2017’s “101 Unique Places to Dine in West Virginia” are up! This year was the first time that we’ve had YOU, the public, vote on your favorite eateries around the Mountain State. On this list you’ll find venerated favorites, unique niche places, and probably more than a few that you’ve never even heard of.
Here are some highlights from the list according to region, but the full 101 guide is available online, too!
In the
Huntington area? Grab an amazing burger or other pub fare at Fat Patty’s, whose place on this list is just another one of the many awards they’ve garnered over the years. There’s also the regional institution Jim’s Steak and Spaghetti House, which devotes one week a year in May to turning out amazing strawberry pies. Don’t miss one of West Virginia’s most unique and kitschy eateries, either — the one and only Hillbilly Hot Dogs, which features a massive 15-inch hot dog called the “Homewrecker”!
Heading south and east, Fayetteville’s Pies & Pints (now a successful franchise) managed to snag the #1 spot on the list with their unique gourmet thin-crust pizzas. The Secret Sandwich Society also took
Lewisburg is another foodie hotspot in the Mountain State. The gourmet goodness of Food & Friends made the list, as did the wood fired neapolitan cuisine of Hill & Holler. And who doesn’t love a classic drive-in? You’ll get that at Jim’s Drive-in; save room for the strawberry milkshake!
Farther north in Bridgeport, Oliverio’s Ristorante also serves up homemade Italian in a family-owned restaurant. Or, for even more amazing Italian, keep
The Ohio River town of Parkersburg boasts a lot of ethnic diversity in its cuisine. Chams Lebanese has unique Middle Eastern and Mediterranean fare. Colombo’s and Da Vinci’s turn out authentic Italian entrees and desserts. For great pub food, check out Der Dog Haus or the North End Tavern & Brewery.
Morgantown, the college-town home of WVU in northern WV, has more than its share of microbreweries and pubs for you to kick back and watch the game. The Morgantown Brewing Company, Iron Horse Tavern, and Terra Cafe all churn out great food and local brews. But, if you want to get a literal fishbowl full of beer, you’ll have to head over to Mario’s Fishbowl.
WV’s panhandle cities have their own unique flavors, too. From the “the country’s best fish sandwich” at Coleman’s Fish Market in Wheeling to the dessert-lover’s paradise at Everything Cheesecake in Martinsburg, you’re sure to satisfy your appetite on your travels through the Mountain State.
These are just a few of the amazing eateries that made this year’s list. To get the full experience of dining in every corner of the state, check out the full 101 list, hop in the car, and get to exploring!
