Tour the Historic Home of George Bird Evans

The Old Hemlock Foundation will open the historic home of George Bird Evans and his wife, Kay Evans, to public tours. The 1782 deeded property is on the National Register of Historic Places. The log home was built in circa 1815. The tours will tell about lives of George and Kay. This tale of love of mountains, art, music, fine writing and English Setters will share about George as an artist, author of mysteries and upland hunting, and breeding the Old Hemlock Line of English Setters. We have two public tours per year. All other visits are by appointment. There are approximately three miles of trails Old Hemlock. Visitors are welcome to use them just by dropping an email to lejay@oldhemlock.org so we know you are on the property.

The Middle Ohio Valley is rich in ancient moments--circles, squares, and even more exotic shapes; most were built about 1800 years ago. Recent aerial photograph analysis and on-the-ground geophysical surveys have found a surprising number of previously undocumented enclosure sites, as well as many new features at well-known sites.

Wheeling Symphony Orchestra presents “Bach Double & Mozart”

Stravinsky, Bach, Danielpour & Mozart André Raphel, conductor Rachel Stegeman, violin Juan Jaramillo, violin Igor Stravinsky’s charming “Pulcinella Suite” begins this all WSO concert. Stravinsky called this work his “discovery of the past” and “gateway” to his future compositions. The timeless Bach “Double Violin Concerto” highlights the virtuosity of our very own Rachel Stegeman and Juan Jaramillo. The lively concerto is characterized by the expressive counterpoint between the two violins. The concert continues with Richard Danilepour’s “Adagietto for Strings” a WSO commission that Danielpour called “…an exciting fusion, being written as it is for Wheeling—one of the smallest cities to maintain an orchestra of this caliber…” The concert concludes with Mozart’s final “Symphony, No. 41” (Jupiter) where Mozart demonstrates his sheer brilliance as a composer. Its emotional range prefigures the vast expressive canvas that foreshadow the symphonies of Beethoven.

Inaugural BB&T Malden Salt Fest

The Inaugural BB&T Malden Salt Fest will be held October 6th to 8th in Malden at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works. There will be music, food, tours, a parade, dancing, crafts, demonstrations, and more! October 6th: Dinner at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works for descendants of salt-works owners, workers, and slaves. Tickets will go on sale in September October 7th: The day kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with an old fashioned parade in downtown Malden which will end at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works. The day will be full of assorted cultural activities such as lectures, films, music and dancing. There will be re-enacting of the salt making of the original settlers, oral history taking and tours. October 8th: A service will be held at the African Zion Church in downtown Malden with gospel singing. The Spring Hill Cemetery will be open for tours of the grounds where the salt maker's and their descendants are buried. 19th Annual Elizabethtown Festival

— The 19th annual Elizabethtown Festival is planned for Sept. 16 at the Moundsville Center, inside the walls of the former West Virginia Penitentiary. The festival celebrates the traditions and customs of the past with bread making, quilt displays, weaving, and many craft items for sale. In 1999, the Moundsville Economic Development Council (MEDC) sponsored the first Elizabethtown Festival celebrating the long-forgotten town Joseph Tomlinson, an Irish immigrant’s son, established in 1738 and named in honor of his wife, Elizabeth. Elizabethtown was the first settlement on the “Flats of Grave Creek” and the Tomlinson family built their dwelling near the site of the Moundsville Middle School. Elizabethtown merged with neighboring Moundsville to become one town in 1866 and on Feb. 23 of that year, the first city officials of the town were named with many family names still local to the area today. The Elizabethtown Festival, originally offered as an 1800s heritage festival, has grown to now include items from the past to the present. Demonstrations of historic trades, food and musical entertainment, along with a cookie and apple pie baking contest, “Anything BUT Chili Soup Contest” and historical memorabilia displays make this event perfect for the entire family. Admission is free! This year, organizers are collaborating with the Uptown Moundsville Activities Committee Fall Festival to hold a large one-day event with a car and motorcycle show. By joining together, the two groups will offer more unique shopping and demonstration opportunities, along with giving locals and travelers more reasons to visit the area. Walk for Freedom

Walk for Freedom is a walk to bring awareness to Human Trafficking. It takes place in countries across the world on October 14th and we are bringing it Charleston. It was started by and organization called a21 and their main goal, other then ending Human Trafficking, is to reach, rescue, and restore victims of Human Trafficking. We will start at Haddad Riverfront Park and walk down Kanawha Blvd to the Capitol building and back. Distance is a little over a 5k. History Center Museum – Upshur County Doctors, Nurses and Undertakers

Summer 2017 Museum Exhibit: Upshur County Doctors, Nurses and Undertakers - If we can't cure you, we'll bury you. Come to downtown Buckhannon to walk through one of the oldest structures in the area, that features a museum exhibit Sunday afternoons from 1 - 4 PM. The Museum's building is one of the oldest historic landmarks in Upshur County. During the Civil War, the structure was commandeered for use by the Federal government (as were most churches in this area) as a food commissary. Betty Hornbeck, in her book Upshur Brothers of the Blue and Gray, writes that on August 30, 1862, following a battle of "Watertank Hill" in a Confederate victory known as "Jenkins Raid", twenty to thirty captured Federal prisoners were marched first to the courthouse and.... "after the arms had been destroyed, the prisoners were taken to the Southern Methodist Church on West Main Street that was being used as a commissary. The church contained thousands of bushels of oats and corn, all of which were taken into the street and burned by the prisoners under order of Commander Jenkins. Green coffee beans were shoe deep in the street." The oil painting inside the Museum, over the front entrance depicts the looting and pillaging of the frightening night so long ago. The History Center Museum is an historic structure, built in 1856 and is the oldest extant building on Main Street, Buckhannon. It was listed on National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

The Wild Ramp’s Annual Farm to Table Dinner has been scheduled for Saturday, September 30th, 2017. Social hour begins at 5 pm and dinner will be served at 6 pm. There will be delicious local food, great music from Moonshine Crossing, and wonderful company in the heart of Old Central City once again as we bring everyone together for our annual dinner. Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1896, has a long and distinguishes history celebrating some of the world’s finest conductors and musicians. The critically-acclaimed orchestra has toured extensively internationally, performing in Europe, the Far East and South America. Under the baton of guest conductor Krzysztof Urbanski, the PSO will perform “Shostakovich Triumphant,” which will include Beethoven’s “Overture to Egmont,” Bruch’s “Violin Concerto No.1” and Shostakovich’s “Symphony No.5.” Urbanski is in his sixth season as the music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Critically-acclaimed violinist Ray Chen will be featured. Chen is the winner of Queen Elisabeth (2009) and Yehudi Menuhin (2008) Competitions.

Collins is known for her eclectic palette as a solo artist, fusing folk, rock, classical and jazz into a singular aesthetic. Appalachian Du/Triathlon

The Appalachian Du/Tri is a perfect challenge for the seasoned athlete or first-time participant. It offer two races, a sprint duathlon or sprint triathlon, each with a team option. The triathlon consists of a 550m swim and the duathlon starts with a 1-mile run. Both events then transition to a 13.25 mile bike ride on paved roads, followed by a 5K on gravel and paved roads.
