3. Ride the Rails through the Mountain State

4. Hike to the Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory
What was once an old fire tower has now become one of the best places in the state to view migrating hawks, eagles, falcons and osprey. The hike to access the Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory is close to a mile and the views from the top are stunning.

6. Visit the World’s Largest Fully-Steerable Telescope
Visit the Green Bank Observatory, home to the world’s premier astronomical telescope. Tours at Green Bank Observatory include incredible science demonstrations, a stop at the interactive room called “Catching the Wave Exhibit Hall” and much more. This area also has some of the state’s best stargazing.
7. Experience Warm Spring Waters
Berkeley Springs State Park is home to an incredible mineral spa that has been in use since colonial times. The park is known for its warm spring water, which flows at a constant temperature of 74.3 degrees.
8. Climb the Via Ferrata
Italian for ‘by way of iron’, the Via Ferrata at NROCKS is a permanently installed system of steel rungs and cables. During a professionally-guided rock climb, you’ll gain 1085 feet in elevation, cross a suspension bridge that is 150 feet high and reach exposed heights of 280 feet.
9. Go Scuba Diving in the “Little Bahamas of the East”
Summersville Lake is a perfect place to explore thanks to its clean, cool waters. While at Summersville Lake enjoy stunning visibility and unique sandstone formations and 60 miles of shoreline. Visit Sarge’s Dive Shop for incredible scuba classes and lessons.
10. Explore Beautiful Harpers Ferry
The beautiful and historic town of Harpers Ferry was the site of John Brown’s Raid and today, features reenactments, museums and living history. Strolling the towns picturesque streets and visiting the trails and battlefields will feel as though you have stepped into the past.
11. Discover How Salt is Made from an Ancient Ocean
Visit J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works for a tour and tasting. While on the tour learn about the fascinating process of how a seventh-generation salt-making family harvests an-all natural salt from an ancient ocean trapped below the Appalachian Mountains.
12. Go Caving
Exploring the deep, winding caverns beneath the state’s beautiful scenery is always an incredible experience. While on scenic tours at Seneca Caverns, Lost World Caverns, Organ Cave and Smoke Hole Caverns you can do some exploring and also learn about the caverns rich history.
