Irish Road Bowling – Kanawha State Forest

An iron and steel small cannonball, called a “bowl” is hurled down a 1.2 mile country lane, fewest throws to the finish line wins, similar to golf. Throws can roll 250 or even 300 yards. Irish Road Bowling can be traced back to the 1600s. One story is that Dutch soldiers brought it when William of Orange came to Ireland in 1689. Another legend says that Irish patriots robbed English cannonballs and rolled them down a country lane by the light of a full moon. Faugh a Ballach! Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Team registration at 12:30 p.m. Located just seven miles south of Charleston, West Virginia, Kanawha State Forest is in close proximity to the heavily populated Kanawha Valley and is a recreational haven. FOOTMAD presents: Foghorn Stringband

One of the finest stringbands on the West Coast! The Foghorn Stringband is steadily proving that American roots music is a never-ending well of inspiration. Onstage, the Foghorn Stringband gathers around one microphone, balancing their music on the fly, and playing with an intense, fiery abandon. Each member comes not only from a different part of the American roots music spectrum, but leads the pack in their field as well. Caleb Klauder’s wistful, keening vocals and rapid-fire mandolin picking are as influenced by Southern roots music as much as by his upbringing in Washington State. Also from Washington, Reeb Willms grew up in the state’s Eastern farmlands singing hard-bitten honky-tonk with her family. Nadine Landry’s roots lie in the rural backroads of Acadian Québec, but she cut her teeth as one of the best bluegrass bassists in Western Canada. Minnesotan Stephen ‘Sammy’ Lind, simply put, is one of the best old-time fiddlers of his generation and has a voice that sounds like it’s coming from an old 78. Admission: $20 adults, $15 over 60, $10 any age with valid student i.d., under 13 and VISTA / AmeriCorps workers FREE
