The Charleston Light Opera Guild presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a musical comedy that centers on a fictional spelling bee in the gymnasium of the Putnam Valley Middle School. An eclectic group of 6 quirky middle school students (usually played by adults) arrive at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for different reasons. The Bee is run by an equally quirky group of 3 adults. Four real audience members are invited on stage during each performance to compete alongside the 6 characters. With a book by Rachel Sheinkin and engaging, tuneful score by William Finn, the 2005 Broadway production won the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for best book. She gets inside a song and shapes and twists it to convey all of the emotion that can be wrought from the lyric.

MOLLIE O'BRIEN & RICH MOORE WITH BRIGID & LUCY MOORE: Families making music together have long been linchpins in the library of American music. It’s the singing. It’s the harmonizing. It’s the way you can’t tell which family member is singing which part. It’s the wonders of DNA at play that bring you into a rich, musical world that comes about only when people with common speech patterns and genetics get together behind a song. Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore’s fans have come to know over the years that they produce thoughtful and rich recordings covering the broad spectrum of all the music we call our own. PATTI SMITH & FAMILY: American rock musician, born on December 30, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 (Performer). TIM O'BRIEN W/ JAN FABRICIUS: Born in Wheeling, West Virginia on March 16, 1954, Tim O’Brien grew up singing in church and in school, and started playing folk and rock music on guitar at age 12. After seeing Doc Watson on TV, he became a lifelong devotee of old time and bluegrass music. VAN WILLIAM: Van William has spent every summer of his life working on his father's commercial salmon fishing boat off Kodiak Island, Alaska - a job he loved and a job that influenced every part of his life. When he wasn't fishing, he was growing up in the small coastal California town of Cambria, learning to write songs and eventually touring the world by the age of 20 - leading a few different indie rock outfits including Port O'Brien and WATERS. CHARLIE MCCOY: Grammy award-winning multi-instrumentalist who has also been a prolific Nashville session musician, especially on harmonica.

DAILEY & VINCENT: Grand Ole Opry Members, Five-time GRAMMY® award winners individually, three-time GRAMMY® award nominees collectively, four-time DOVE Award winners, and winners of 35 IBMA Awards altogether (including 3-time IBMA Entertainer of the Year Award winners and 3-Time Vocal Group of the Year Award winners), Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent, backed by one of the best bands on tour today, are some of the most reputable and elite entertainers in American music; bluegrass, traditional country and gospel music. RICHIE AND ROSIE: Richie Stearns and Rosie Newton grew up a 150 miles and few decades apart. While both were raised by professional cellist, Richie started playing banjo at 14 and Rosie began classical piano lessons at eight, eventually moving to classical viola as a teen. Both shared incredibly unique, musically-immersed childhoods: Richie’s family founded the iconic GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance (which he is now President of) and by her junior year of high school, Rosie was playing fiddle and touring with folk rock band The Mammals. During that time, the two were introduced at Saratoga Springs’ Flurry festival -- a meeting that would spark a fated friendship and unique musical bond.

The West Virginia Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
The West Virginia Music Hall of Fame's seventh induction ceremony welcomes its new class of inductees: Hasil Adkins, Frank Hutchison, Ann Magnuson, The Morris Brothers, Fred “Sonic” Smith, and Michael W. Smith. Presenters and acceptors include West Virginia Governor Bob Wise (The Morris Brothers); Tim O’Brien (Frank Hutchison); Patti, Jesse and Jackson Smith (Fred “Sonic” Smith). The house band will again be led by 2008 WVMHoF inductee Charlie McCoy. The show will be hosted by Tony award winning actor and Huntington native Michael Cerveris and Wheeling native Mollie O’Brien.

Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie
On the heels of a sold-out critically acclaimed summer tour, longtime Fleetwood Mac members Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie will grace the stage of the Clay Center on November 2nd at 7:30 p.m. The joint collaboration began three years ago, when McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac for the group’s “On With The Show” tour. The pair went in to record new material prior to rehearsals for the tour and their natural creative chemistry was reignited.

FestivALL Fall: Carriage Trail Leaf Walk
Revel in the colors of West Virginia's fall foliage at the Carriage Trail Leaf Walk on Sunday, Oct. 22 from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Enjoy vignettes from Alban Arts Center, Children's Theatre of Charleston, and LimeLight Theatre Company; live music by the Carriage Trail Horn Trio and vilolinist Alasha Al-Qudah with guitarist Ray Singleton; and other artful adventures. Take a stroll on the .65 mile trail and experience the arts in a not so typical place. Parking is limited. KRT will provide free shuttle service between this event and The Spring Hill Cemetery Founders Day Program with a stop downtown at Taylor Books. Appalachian Children’s Chorus ‘Blue Jean Ball’
The Blue Jean Ball is the social event of the fall! Dress in your blue jeans, add some bling and come dance with us! River Jam will play live for guests to show their moves on the dance floor. ACC's Concert Choir will sing a few tunes with the band. There will be plenty of food, but it’s not a full, sit down dinner. Reformation Fest
Redeemer Lutheran Church will host a four-event Reformation Fest (reformationfest.org) on Saturday, October 21, 2017, from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., on the church campus to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Reformation Fest features four events: Disc-Golf Tournament At 9 a.m. the festival will kick off with a disc golf tournament to benefit the Feed My Sheep school food program supporting Alum Creek Elementary School. Festival of Food At 11 a.m., Redeemer Lutheran will offer free food including bratwurst and will open a children’s obstacle course. Reformation Walk Also beginning at 11 a.m., the Reformation Walk will offer a self-guided experience to trace the events that led to the Protestant Reformation, rediscovery of the Gospel, and sweeping changes in the world. There will be 10 interactive stations set up throughout the church. Martin Luther Movie At 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., Redeemer will host a free screening of the movie “Martin Luther: The Idea That Changed the World.” Reverend Frank Ruffatto, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, will hold a brief question and answer session between showings. The Protestant Reformation began October 31, 1517, in Wittenberg, Germany, when Martin Luther posted his thoughts about theological topics and the practices of the Church. That simple action began the Reformation — a movement that changed Western society. The Gospel of Grace Alone, Faith Alone, and Word Alone was rediscovered.

70th Anniversary Airshow
Charleston’s Yeager Airport and the West Virginia Air National Guard's 130th Airlift Wing will celebrate their 70th anniversary with an air show Sept. 30-Oct. 1, featuring flying demonstrations, aircraft displays and tours, and rides aboard World War II-era aircraft. The air show will include several examples of aircraft associated with the airport during its early years, including a Curtiss C-46 Commando transport plane — the first aircraft assigned to the West Virginia Air Guard’s 130th Airlift Wing — and an American Airlines DC-3, the first commercial aircraft to operate at Kanawha Airport during its 1947 debut. A World War II-era P-51 fighter will be part of a “Rise Above” traveling exhibit detailing the history of the Tuskegee Airmen, who formed the first two squadrons of black fighter pilots given the opportunity to serve in the U.S. military and did so with distinction during World War II. Other aircraft committed to taking part in the air show, so far, include World War II-era B-17 Flying Fortress and B-25 Mitchell bombers and a C-47 Skytrain transport from the Yankee Air Museum. Also scheduled are a World War I-era Curtiss JN-4 Jenny biplane, a Stinson L-5 “Flying Jeep” single-engine observation plane, a T-6 Texan training aircraft for fighter pilots and a World War II-era Grumman TMB Avenger torpedo bomber. Rides will be available aboard the B-17 and B-25 bombers for a fee. Rides can be booked at http://yankeeairmuseum.org/fly/ Entry to the air show will be free, with parking available on the airfield from an entry gate at the general aviation area. Overflow parking will be available in Yeager Airport’s long-term parking garages. Buses will shuttle air show attendees from the parking areas to the entry gate. Walk for Freedom is a walk to bring awareness to Human Trafficking. It takes place in countries across the world on October 14th and we are bringing it Charleston. Headliner: Ashton Shepherd A gifted country songwriter and singer, Ashton Shepherd was born August 16, 1986, in Coffeeville, Alabama. She reportedly began singing as soon as she could talk and began writing song lyrics in notebooks when she was only five or six years old. Shepherd entered her first country showdown when she was eight, singing Patsy Cline songs, and was soon performing regularly at local fairs, benefits, and community events. She picked up the guitar when she was 15 and that same year her parents helped finance a self-released CD, which Shepherd sold at her shows. In 2006 she won a talent contest in Gilbertown, Alabama, for which the prize was an opening slot at a Lorrie Morgan concert. Spotted by a Nashville producer at the Morgan show, Shepherd was invited to Nashville to record, and soon signed with MCA Nashville, beginning work on an album, Sounds So Good, with veteran producer Buddy Cannon later that same year. A debut single from the project, the impressive "Takin' Off This Pain," hit the airwaves in September of 2007, and the Sounds So Good album was released in 2008. Sounds So Good peaked at a reputable 16 on the country charts and for her next album, 2011's Where Country Grows, she streamlined her Americana sound slightly and the record peaked at 11 on the country charts. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi Opener: Seth Bunting At a young age, Seth Bunting found a passion for singing. He was raised in Boone County, West Virginia where he was surrounded by gospel, country, and pop. Throughout the years Seth sang as often as possible, finding a stage and an audience for anyone who would listen. He was first involved in musicals with his local theater groups, then grew to actively singing in churches, performing in dance classes and competitions. It was at one of these competitions that Seth was discovered by a talent scout for BCE (Bobby Cyrus Entertainment). It was then Seth was able to continue his passion further by writing, recording, and performing his upcoming album. His latest single, “That's What I'm Talking' 'Bout” marks his debut to the country music world. The song is an up-tempo melodic country song that displays Seth’s vocal talent. The song was born when he was connected with Corey Barker and Anita Cox to co-write. After months on months of atrist development and over 20 songs written together, they realized through all the new material that an album would be born. The team headed to the Kent Wells Studio in Franklin, Tennessee and began recording. “That's What I'm Talkin' 'Bout” stood out among all of the other songs and caught on with his fans. The single debuted on August 19, 2016. Seth has since relocated from West Virginia to Nashville, Tennessee where he is busy co-writing, traveling, and collaborating with local musicians while we wait the release of his newest tracks.

Headliner: Priscilla Price Priscilla's first single, in 1973, was a re-release of "Funny." Picked up by BASF, it went to No. 17 on Billboard's top 30 R&B chart. "You Better Watch Yourself" is Priscilla's 2002 Rock House Records release, produced by Roy Roberts on his Rock House Label. "I'm Not for Sale" is the title of Priscilla's 1997 CD. Produced by Roy Roberts for King Snake/Rockhouse Records. Price's vocals combine gospel roots with pop sensibilities. She also loves the slow, smoldering blues songs that many singers wish they could achieve. Priscilla Price was presented with a “Life Time Achievement Award" by the Blues Society of Detroit in 2006.

Opener: GypsyRhythm GypsyRhythm formed in the fall of 2012 as a belly dancing duo, eventually branching out into live music and adding a percussionist to the group. Our members are... multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. We began performing by going to open mics and performing original belly dance choreography and playing a new genre of music, with both cover songs and original works and by performing with some local artists and projects. Soon we booked several shows in Charleston at The Boulevard Tavern, The Empty Glass, Third Eye Cabaret, and Nomadic Tribes Collective, along with upcoming appearances at Roni's Pizza Bar and More, and on 88.1 FM for a live radio interview on WTSQ's Musicians Edition. We currently host open mic at The Empty Glass every third Monday night of the month.

Opener: Union Sound Treaty Union Sound Treaty is based out of Morgantown, West Virginia. Outsiders may not exactly view this as the most ideal location for a band to base its music career. However, it does allow the boys to exist on an island of creativity, remain close to their roots, and play out…A LOT. Union Sound Treaty was founded in the latter part of 2015. Charles had searched for months at regional open-mics and songwriter nights to find like-minded musicians who had aspirations of playing original songs for a living. Thanks to a mutual friend, Charles was able to cross paths with Shawn and John. The three soon hatched a plan of starting the group that would eventually become Union Sound Treaty. Charles grew up with Ross and the two spoke often about each other’s music. So, when it came time to find a drummer for the band, Charles knew Ross was the critical piece this band needed. Union Sound Treaty fell upon great fortune in March 2016 when they were given the opportunity to go to Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN. They would begin work on what would become their debut album, Next Year (released November 4th, 2016). In the same room where Chris Stapleton’s Traveler was tracked, the boys of Union Sound Treaty laid the foundations of what would become an impressive debut. “With Next Year you also feel like you’re listening to a record of a band that is only going to continue to get better, and you’ll be listening to them and Charles Godwin for years to come. These guys have a bead on what really resonates in country music with listeners.”- Saving Country Music. Headliner: Sundy Best Sundy Best crafts music that re-imagines timeless classic rock of the ‘70s and ‘80s – think the Eagles and the smart, whiskey-voiced lyrics of Tom Petty and Bob Seger. With Nick on guitar and Kris on cajon, Sundy Best takes that sound, modernizes it in their own unique way by borrowing hints of country and bluegrass, to make it personal. Offstage, the pair are lifelong friends, college athletes and dog-lovers; onstage the musical duo delivers something wholly fresh and original, blending their best influences with personal music histories.
CharCon
CharCon is THE West Virginia Gaming Convention. For 2017 CharCon is moving to the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences of West Virginia. The Clay Center is an awesome modern facility located in downtown Charleston WV. Hosting a great performance hall, an art museum, a science discovery center and much more, the Clay Center is a great facility and community partner. -A small sampling of activities -The Premier Board Game Tournament -Play to Win Board Games! -Board game library – Each year the Appalachian Gamers bring games to the convention for use by other attendees. There is also plenty of space for open gaming so bring your favorite game, find some players and get your game on! -RPGs – There will be a variety of RPGs at this year’s convention. We have game masters running D&D 4th Edition, Pathfinder, Confluence, mystery, Superhero events and many others. -Miniatures – Flames of War, Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Aerodrome, Sailpower, Kings of War and many more events will be available for play at this year’s convention. Change is always hard and this will be no exception. There will be adjustments and alterations, but when the dust settles, we are confident everyone will be happy with the results. Headliner: Split Nixon Formed in the spring of 2002 from Ashland Kentucky, this band of brothers with a thirst for musical success and a strong willingness to blaze the path, Split Nixon began it's journey. Countless rehearsals and studio sessions led to the self titled freshman album completed early in 2004. After it's release, Split Nixon would begin playing numerous regional shows throughout Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. The band quickly gathered a legion of fans in the area and also attracted the attention of many local radio stations. Shortly after, the band signed a management deal with Ameritone Entertainment from Los Angelos, CA This led to national tours with platinum selling acts such as Saliva and Theory of a Deadman. To date, Split Nixon has shared the stage with countless national acts such as the above mentioned, Shinedown, Soil, Hell Yeah, Black Stone Cherry, Seven Mary Three, Hale Storm, Bobaflex, Ra and many many others. Charleston Team Cycling Classic
The inaugural Charleston Team Cycling Classic will be truly one of a kind. Teams of three cyclists will compete over two days in three disciplines to decide an overall winner. Each stage will award points to cyclists for their finish placing in that event (the Team Time Trial will award 1, 2, and 3 points to the first place team so it isn't weighted more than other events). A podium sweep would earn 1, 2, and 3 points for a team total of 6 points for that event. At the end of three events, the lowest cumulative team points total wins. In the event of a tie, the Team Time Trial results will be the first tie-breaker (there will be more, but it's highly unlikely we'll need them). This race won't be over until the last finish line is crossed! It's your chance to stand on the podium of a stage race with your two best teammates. Visit the website to register.
