Skiing and Snowboarding

West Virginia is a prime location in the southeast for skiing and snowboarding. Due to a combination in snow patterns and elevation, West Virginia is one of the first states to receive snow, which allows for a long season on the slopes. Trails range from beginner to advanced, so no matter where your skill level might be, there’s a pass for you. Natural snowmaking, high peaks, long runs and unsurpassed beauty make for a winter experience like no other.

Winterplace Ski Resort

Winterplace is the smallest and farthest south resort in West Virginia, but Mountain State skiers love it. Why? For starters, Winterplace is incredibly close to Beckley, Charleston and Lewisburg, and right off the interstate. All of its runs (and tubing lanes) are open to night skiing, too, so it’s a great after-work destination for southern West Virginia locals. And, it’s got 100% snowmaking coverage. It’s definitely the Mountain State’s most convenient resort.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort

Snowshoe is West Virginia’s biggest ski resort, and it has the highest total elevation drop. Its lifts service 251 acres. And with some runs approaching 1,500 feet, it’s got the steepest and longest slopes in the entire eastern U.S. south of New England. With a new terrain park, tubing park and cross country ski trails, there are a lot of winter sports to try here, plus a whole mountaintop village to explore.

Canaan Valley Resort State Park

This state park has got it going on year round, but it really shines in the winter with its slopes. It’s got 4 lifts, 47 runs, and 850 feet of elevation change. More than half of its terrain is long beginner and intermediate runs, and the rest is advanced and expert territory.

Canaan Valley is one of West Virginia’s most family-friendly ski resorts. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, you can also tube, cross-country ski or even ice skate here. Plus, you can go on horse-drawn sleigh rides nearby!
