Pricketts Fort Lecture Series: The European Concept of the American Indian and Caitlin’s Restoration with Marian Hollenger

July 26, 2015 @ 2:00 pm

Many European artists included figure of American Indians in their paintings of various 18th century wars on this continent, frequently casting them in the guise of the ‘noble savage.’ George Caitlin, however, documented the Indians as he found them and began a process of observing their daily life which would, finally, restore them to the position of actual people, not symbols. Marian J Hollinger is an art historian whose specialties range from the 13th to the early 20th century. She currently teaches in the FSU Art Department and the Folk Life Center.
