8 Spots To Find Fall Adventure
Getting out and exploring is always an appealing option in Almost Heaven—but when the summer heat cools off fall adventure really takes off. From classic favorites to unexpected utopia’s, explore our 8 picks for fall adventure this season.
1. Explore On Foot
Harpers Ferry, WV
With a history that sets it apart, the Appalachian Trail is a bucket list item for nearly every backpacker. Starting in Maine and ending in Georgia, the 2,000 mile plus thru-hike of the A.T. is not for the faint of heart. Luckily for visitors of Almost Heaven, the Appalachian Trail passes through a special piece of West Virginia in Jefferson County. Hike a portion of the A.T. passing through Harpers Ferry and get a feel for the “trail magic” that sets it apart.
2. Go Thrill Chasing
Catch some speed in the vibrant treetops this fall with a WV State Parks ziplining adventure. Pipestem Peaks has the perfect tour to try out this season. Starting at the Canyon Rim Visitors Center, this zipline excursion lasts about 3.5 hours and can get riders up to speeds of 50 mph. As you enjoy the adrenaline-pumping ride, you will also be able to soak up the incredible Summers County views.
3. Cast A Line
Tygart Valley River
As glowing orange and red leaves float downstream, fall is the perfect time to spend a day by the river. Head to Marion County, with your fly fishing gear in tow, where you can tackle the flow of the Tygart Valley River. Stand on the river’s edge to drop a line or brave the cool waters to cast from the flowing river. Be sure to check out the river’s rapid falls at Valley Falls State Park, where anglers have been known to catch largemouth and smallmouth bass.
4. Find World-Renowned Fun
One of the world’s largest off-road trail systems, the Hatfield-McCoy Trails are a must-try for anyone looking to experience adventure. When planning your trip, choose from over 10 trails, each boasting different difficulty levels and experiences. Looking to extend your getaway? Book a nearby cabin and make a weekend out of your trail excursion to catch the late fall color in Southern West Virginia.
5. Catch A View From Above
Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory
Originally used to spot forest fires in the distance, the Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory in Monroe County is now a one-of-a-kind spot for view seekers. Nestled atop a rocky ledge in the Jefferson National Forest, this vantage point is perfect for catching a glimpse of migrating hawks, eagles and falcons—as well as golden fall color. The trek to this rustic tower is around a mile, though its high inclines will have you putting in the work!
6. Make Trail Memories
Otter Creek Wilderness
Head into the lush forests of the Otter Creek Wilderness to enjoy the crisp mornings of hunting season. In this wild slice of Almost Heaven, you will find everything from bears and deer to turkey and grouse. Be sure to secure your WV DNR hunting license so you are good to go when the season rolls around this year. In this Randolph County wilderness, you can make lasting memories on the trail.
7. Giddy Up
Adventures on the Gorge
Explore Almost Heaven on horseback to capture the spirit of fall as the leaves begin to turn. With Adventures on the Gorge leading the way, your horseback riding trip will be a serene escape. Hit the trail when the sun is high in the sky or opt for the popular Sunset Horseback Trail Ride to experience a magical evening in the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve.
8. Camping With A Twist
Lost River State Park
If you have packed up your camping gear for the season, think again! The cool nights of fall are no match for the heated Tentr campsites of Lost River State Park. Each pre-set canvas tent comes equipped with a propane tent heater as well as a cozy memory foam mattress. With this easier than ever way to camp in Hardy County, you can spend your days enjoying the park’s scenic overlooks and come back to the perfect glamping stay at night.
